The top 10 decorating rules I swear by

If you are planning on re-vamping your home this year, here are my top decorating rules to help you create your perfect interior design scheme.

Always make sure each room has layers

When decorating, break each room down into layers. Your base layer is your walls and floors which ground the space. Your second layer includes core pieces of furniture like sofas and kitchen tables. The third layer includes smaller furniture, and the final layer includes textiles and accessories which you can change more often.

Have a theme to pull your scheme together

If you have a pattern or a colour that you carry through from room to room, your home will look more cohesive. It could be a colour or pattern that runs through each room or a material or wood. It will make your home look more considered and stylish.

Create a focal point in every room

Create one design focal point in every room. A focal point could be a fireplace, a piece of artwork, a stunning rug, an accent wall or a hero piece of furniture.

Don’t worry about having everything matching

A room decorated with pieces from one shop will look bland and boring.  Use an eclectic approach to decorating to create a home that is stylish and unique.

Mix old and new to add character

Mix vintage or antique furniture with modern pieces. If you have a strong sense of personal style, you’ll probably find they all work together.

Pay attention to lighting

I don’t think any room is complete without at least three sources of lighting, including overhead lighting – this will give you plenty of ambiance options, and you can make it more flexible by adding dimmer switches.

Play with different proportions

Playing with scale can completely transform a space. Don’t be afraid of big or small accessories – they will just add drama to your home.

Think of your ceiling as a 5th wall

When designing a space as well as paying attention to your walls, think of your ceiling as a fifth wall. Adding wallpaper or a dramatic accent paint color can make a ceiling come alive.

Mix and match textures

Make sure you combine different textures when decorating your home.  An easy way to do with is with accessories – think about the mix of woollen rugs, velvet cushions, silk lampshades and wooden furniture.

Add an unexpected accent

Add personality to your space by adding something surprising to give a pop of interest. A piece of designer furniture, an oversized light or a dramatic wallpaper can turn a room from bland to boring.
