Home Interior Design 101: Bright, Bold Colours

The use of vibrant colour in your home can completely transform your space. However, I know that many people are afraid to go bold; it is so much more dramatic than neutral tones, after all. It’s quite a commitment choosing electric blue for your walls or neon window treatments, but it’s a commitment that can really pay off!

As a professional designer, I love using colour to brighten spaces and make a statement. Colour is a wonderful thing and certain tones are known to have positive effects on well-being and motivation.

There are so many different ways to bring vivid hues into your space; from fresh blooms to bright furniture and fun decor. Even the smallest touches can have a huge impact on your home interior design. If you’re struggling to envision how colour could work for you, here are some ideas to help you get started.

Start With a Neutral Foundation

One of my favourite projects involved renovating a beautiful Georgian maisonette to create a fashionable, modern pad. Colour isn’t limited to new-build apartments, period properties benefit from a splash of it too!

For this project, we started with white and cream walls throughout one floor, and layered colourful elements on top. A neutral foundation is great because it allows you to change your home interior design scheme as often as you wish. Bright and vivid colours in artwork and removable decor such as cushions is also much easier and less time consuming to change than repainting a colourful wall, if you don’t choose to use bright colours in paint.

The white walls and bright colours of this Georgian penthouse attract the light and make the rooms feel large and airy. This is a great technique for creating an illusion of space in smaller homes. To try this in your own space, upcycle an old coffee table with a coat of paint and purchase a few brilliantly coloured pieces. Lamps and shades, vases, bowls and cushions can be low cost investments and a great way to acquaint yourself with the idea of bright home interior design.

Be Inspired by Unconventional Buildings

Some of the most striking homes and workplaces have taken inspiration from unconventional spaces. For example, the industrial home interior design trend is inspired by warehouses and factories.

Your space should be an extension of you – it should accommodate your personality, your lifestyle, your interests and how it should function for you. That’s what I took into account when I redesigned Squeeze, a juice bar in Bath. Juices are healthy, full of flavour and always the most wonderful colours, so I made sure the shop reflected that. I used nature’s colour palette and took inspiration from the beautiful hues of vegetable and fruit to create a lively, enticing bar.

When it comes to adding colour to your own home, look for inspiration in unlikely places. And treat decorating your space like you do dressing yourself, with your personality and unique taste in mind.
