There’s a lot to love about new-build home. They’re energy efficient, low maintenance and designed for modern living. But because developers often use the same kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and neutral colour schemes across an entire development, they can sometimes feel a little lacking in personality.
The good news is that a modern home or new build is also a brilliant blank canvas. With a few thoughtful design choices, you can create a home that feels warm, individual and completely your own.
1. Mix old with new

If you love the character of period homes, introduce vintage or antique pieces. An old chest of drawers, a reclaimed dining table or a colourful vintage armchair can add warmth and history to a contemporary space.
You don’t need to fill the house with antiques. Vintage mirrors, ceramics, artwork and accessories can have just as much impact. I love the contrast of old pieces against the clean lines of a modern home.
2. Add architectural detail

New builds don’t always have the decorative features found in period properties, but you can introduce character through carefully chosen architectural details.
Wall panelling, picture rails, decorative mouldings and ceiling roses can add depth and interest. Even smaller changes, such as upgrading standard door handles, light switches and fittings, can make a home feel more considered and bespoke.
Salvage yards are also wonderful places to find unusual pieces, from reclaimed tiles and vintage door furniture to old fireplaces and decorative details.
3. Use colour, pattern and texture

Neutral interiors help developers sell houses, but they don’t necessarily reflect the people who live in them.
Colour is one of the quickest ways to give a new-build home personality. Paint a room in a bold colour, introduce patterned wallpaper or add stronger shades through furniture and accessories.
Texture is just as important. Rugs, curtains, cushions, throws and natural materials all help soften smooth new surfaces and make a room feel warmer and more layered. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, either – a considered combination of stripes, florals and geometrics can bring a room to life.
4. Display the things you love

The most interesting homes tell you something about the people who live in them.
Books, artwork, family photographs, travel finds and collections all add personality. Instead of buying accessories simply to fill empty shelves, display things that have meaning to you and allow your home to evolve over time.
A home is often more interesting when everything doesn’t match perfectly. Objects collected at different times and from different places naturally create layers and tell a story.
5. Layer your lighting

Many new-build homes rely heavily on ceiling spotlights, which are practical but can feel harsh on their own.
Create a softer, more welcoming atmosphere by combining ceiling lighting with table lamps, floor lamps and wall lights at different heights around the room. Decorative lighting is also a great opportunity to express your style – a sculptural floor lamp, vintage table lamp or statement pendant can become a focal point in its own right.
A Blank Canvas Full of Potential
Period homes may come with built-in history and character, but new builds offer something equally exciting: a blank canvas.
By mixing old and new, introducing colour and texture, adding thoughtful details and surrounding yourself with things you genuinely love, you can turn even the most neutral new build into a home that feels warm, layered and completely individual.
