5 Ways to Banish the January Blues

It’s mid-January and that infamous post-Christmas, post-New Year slump has hit. If you’re feeling the sting of the January blues, here are some simple ways to combat them at home:

  1. Natural Lighting

January is dark, wet and cold so make sure your home is light, warm and cosy. Really good lighting can totally change the atmosphere of a room, and your mood.

Let in as much natural light as you possibly can, throw open the curtains or blinds and keep them open until the sun sets. On really grey days, give the sun a boost with natural daylight bulbs; these very clever bulbs are designed to replicate natural sunlight. It has been reported that they may help you feel less tired, moody and strained.

  1. Bring Life to Your Home

Embrace the power of plants! Florals and greenery can have a really positive impact on the home, and they certainly add vibrancy and life to a space. There’s also a great sense of satisfaction to be gained from nurturing something and watching it grow, so get those green fingers out!

  1. Think about Fragrance

Scent is very intrinsically linked with emotion and memories. A favourite fragrance can take you back to a summer holiday or remind you of a special someone. It can also be used to improve your mood in the here and now. Whether you need to feel relaxed and free, energised and refreshed or just generally chirpier, there’s a scent to suit.

Use scented candles, essential oils, diffusers or just plain old room sprays to spruce up your space.

  1. Finish A Project

There’s always something to do around the house; paint to be touched up, a cabinet to fix, a tile to replace. Set yourself a little challenge in January to get some of these jobs done. The project will keep your mind active and occupied, and you’ll feel an enormous sense of accomplishment when things are done.

  1. A Touch of Colour

The role colour plays in human psychology is well-documented, but even on a basic level we know that certain colours make us feel certain ways. If you’re feeling a little lacklustre bring a touch of your favourite shade into your home. Whether you pick out a few new cushions, opt for fresh bedsheets or indulge in a lick of paint, a hint of colour is sure to make you feel great!
