Contemporary house, outskirts of Bath

Rather than introducing colour through decoration, the scheme relies on furniture, texture, lighting, artwork and carefully chosen objects to give the predominantly white interiors warmth and personality. In the main living spaces, new pieces from Poliform, Gubi and Knoll sit alongside existing furniture, while bespoke and carefully selected side tables, rugs and accessories add layers of texture and interest. The Modern Art Buyer worked with our clients selecting pieces of art which sit beautifully with the style of interior.

Lighting plays an important role throughout the house, from the Vibia Skan pendants which sit at varying levels over the kitchen table to the striking black and glass Nuura pendants in the library and garden room, and carefully chosen table and floor lamps. In the bedrooms, soft neutrals fabrics were used for the contemporary wave curtains: Zoffany and Ian Mankin Newbury Light Grey curtains provide a soft, understated backdrop, while the cinema room is given a richer, theatrical feel using Teal velvet curtains draped to one side.

The large expanses of glazing throughout the ground floor, and the split level descent to the garden room form a natural link between the house and the newly landscaped garden. A new and a vintage Ligne Roset sofa, Eames lounge chair and pouffe and armchair made by our client are combined with a geometric rug, sculptural lighting and a collection of personal artwork and objects The parquet flooring has been extended into the garden room, creating a seamless transition between the main house and this relaxing room where our clients listen to music and can come for a quiet moment away from the main living area.

The show piece of the very large reception room in the centre of the house is the group of 3 curved cream sofas from Sedilia upholstered in fabric from the Yarn Collective. These are positioned on a sculptural rug from Bolia with organically shaped marble tables by Poliform. The curved sofas were chosen to off-set the geometric shapes and straight lines of this very generously proportioned living room, and with their beautiful shape and curved backs look great viewed from any angle.

Outside, the design continues with a number of seating and dining areas, using pieces from Case and Vincent Sheppard alongside outdoor rugs and lighting. The result is a calm, contemporary home that feels connected to its setting, while the combination of existing possessions and new pieces gives the interiors a sense of history and, importantly, of the people who live there.
