Modern properties have shrunk by 2 square metres over the last decade (and have fewer rooms as a result) and families are getting bigger. In order to fit everything (and everyone) in, we need to get smarter about the furniture we buy. Modular design is the solution.<\/p>\n Modular design simply refers to an item made up of independent units that can be put together in a range of ways. Modular furniture is really useful for smaller properties because one piece can serve multiple purposes. For example, a unit that takes up no more room than the average bookcase but can be a room divider, shelving and side table all at once.<\/p>\n I love modular design. It\u2019s functional, versatile and often looks pretty cool too. I\u2019ve put together a few of my favourite pieces and designers to share with you today.<\/p>\n This fully customisable, multi-function shelving unit<\/a> was designed by Rotterdam-based Studio Lorier. It can be a bookshelf, room divider, side table, stool or TV stand. The concept is simple; a selection of cubes can be taken apart and put back together in any configuration with easy-to-use clips. It\u2019s available in a range of colours and shipping to the UK is surprisingly affordable. There\u2019s a smaller version<\/a> available too, for seriously size-limited spaces.<\/p>\n Wall-mounted furniture systems are a really smart solution to limited floor space. One such system is the Kerf Wall<\/a> by Seattle based Kerf Design. The wall is designed like a peg board but on a much larger (and more stylish) scale. A selection of cabinets and shelves can be hung on the wall in any configuration and can be rearranged as needed. You can even add fold-up desks and collapsible tables!<\/p>\n
