Imagine waking up to the sound of crashing waves, bonfires on the beach and long walks across cliff tops…

Sadly, beach living isn’t on the cards for many of us, but that easy-breezy lifestyle isn’t entirely out of reach. Coastal – or nautical – interior design has been a favourite among designers and homeowners for years. It’s a trend that never really loses appeal, or goes out of fashion, it simply evolves with time.

This airy, bright and relaxed look can work year-round; it’s not just for spring and summer. Here are a few ways to create your very own beautiful coastal retreat:

Firstly, a subtle approach is key. For a stylish home that evokes memories of summer holidays and Britain’s beautiful coastline don’t overload your space with beach-themed accessories. You don’t need lighthouse ornaments, a collection of shells or hundreds of boat motifs to create this look. It’s all about the use of colour, pattern and materials.

In terms of colour, think white, blue, green and coral. Be inspired by the many colours of the ocean – from jewel-like turquoise to deep, moody navy and everything in between.

White is an excellent colour for walls and floors; it will make even the darkest room feel bright and airy. It’s also a great base on which to layer your oceanic hues.

You’ll see lots of wood in coastal homes, particularly raw, minimally treated timber. From wood-panelled walls to driftwood mantle pieces and neatly stacked logs next to the fire, wood is an essential feature for this look.

Glass is another wonderful material for the coastal look. Big, open windows will let in lots of light, whilst mirrors and glass furniture will reflect light and colour beautifully.

Stripes and polka dots are classic coastal designs. You can go for a traditional white and blue stripe or red, pink or orange for something a little more contemporary. Other typical patterns include gingham checks and chevron.

Now comes the fun part: accessorising! A few finishing touches will really bring that beach look home.

Plants are essential Aloe Vera or any type of palm will look spectacular in a coastal living room or bedroom. Decorative coral-like sculptures, sea turtle ornaments, botanical paintings, rope baskets and big glass vases are also ideal accents. You can go big with a wall-hung surfboard and shell print wallpaper or small with a fisherman’s lantern and nothing else. The choice is all yours!

Have fun with coastal style!

Coastal – or nautical – interior design has been a favourite among designers and homeowners for years.
