Here are my top picks:

The Barcelona Chair

The Barcelona chair is probably one of the most recognised products of the last century. Created by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich in 1929, the chair is manufactured today by Knoll. The modernist design is functional and elegant and the chair is almost entirely crafted by hand. This piece of furniture is as much about quality and craftsmanship as it is aesthetic appeal.

The Caravaggio Lamp

Simple, androgynous and functional – the Caravaggio Lamp, designed by Cecilie Manz in 2005, is a very recent addition to the design canon. It epitomises Danish minimalism and since its inception has inspired hundreds of imitations. The pendant-shaped lamp has become synonymous with industrial design but it will shine on long after the industrial trend fades.

Chesterfield Sofas

Deep buttoned leather, rolled arms and equal back and arm height are the signature features of a Chesterfield Sofa. The exact origin of this design classic is unknown. Many believe it was famed trendsetter Lord Phillip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694 – 1773) who commissioned the first sofa of its kind (hence the name). Some 300 years later, and these gorgeous sofas are still very much in demand.

Conran Balance Shelving

The Balance Alcove Shelving unit is an interesting take on the average bookcase. It’s another modern classic from Sir Terence Conran being both distinctive yet understated enough to suit any setting. There may be many imitations on the high street, but nothing will ever quite match the subtle elegance of the original. It’s available in two widths and matching coffee and console tables are also available.

Monochrome

My top 5 list wouldn’t be complete without a nod to the most iconic of colour combinations. There is nothing more timelessly chic than black and white. It’s modern, fresh and striking. And it’s been making waves in fashion and interior design for decades. This ‘trend’ will always reign supreme.

Image: Clair Strong Interior Design Trends come and go but there are some things that never go out of style.
