Beautiful graphic patterns in every colour and shape imaginable have taken the catwalk and interiors world by storm.

But geometry isn’t found only in printed patterns; it can be seen in furniture, architecture and nature too. Which means this trend can be incorporated into your home in more ways than one.

What is geometry and how can I make it work in my space?

Geometry is a branch of mathematics concerned with shape, size, position and the properties of space. In a purely technical sense, geometry is a really important aspect of interior design; we use it to lay out a room, to choose furniture and accessories that fit the space, both physically and aesthetically. Geometry helps create a space that is comfortable, well-proportioned, symmetrical and pleasing to the eye.

It’s important to remember this when selecting geometric patterns or furniture – it’s all about balance. Too many angular shapes and sharp corners can create discord as they all fight for attention, but just the right amount will look great and create a soothing, harmonious atmosphere.

You can achieve just the right balance in one of two ways. Either with one statement item (like a brightly coloured wall-hanging or a rug) in an otherwise minimal space, or by mixing lots of geometric prints in varied scales but a limited and coordinating colour palette.

It’s really quite easy to instantly update your space with this trend. Geometric print textiles, angular pendant lamps and shapely accessories can be quickly incorporated into your existing interior scheme and are easy to replace if you fancy a change.

If you’re really committed to this look, more permanent updates might include fabulous geometric wallpaper, upholstered sofas or cool, contemporary furniture (like the Geometric Table by Brooklyn-based VOLK).

Image: Clair Strong Interior Design Geometric prints are everywhere at the moment.
