A child’s colourful bedroom.

Many people are a bit nervous about using colour, and stick to safe neutrals in their homes. There’s a place for both, but colour can be like a magic spell, you cast it on your home and suddenly the space is completely transformed. You’re missing out on all the fun if you only ever decorate with magnolia.

I love using colour in my home interior design projects. Whether I’m decorating my own place, or renovating a client’s, I can’t resist getting out the paint chart. Today I’m going to show you a few of my favourite colour combinations. I hope it will encourage those of you who are a little afraid of hue to try something new in your space.

Grey and Sunshine Yellow

Grey is undoubtedly the colour of the moment. It’s cool, sophisticated and available in at least 50 shades, from a pale, almost lavender hue to a deep, deep blue-grey. If you want a neutral foundation on which you can layer any bright colour, grey is perfect.

Together, grey and yellow perform the perfect balancing act. The yellow adds a sunny disposition to moody grey, while grey tones down potentially overbearing yellow. The combination is playful, creative and chic, making it ideal for home offices or living rooms.

Blue on Blue on Blue

At the design shows in September I noticed that deep sea hues were a focus. I loved the way different shades of blue were layered to create a monochromatic scheme with a difference. It’s a really contemporary palette that creates a comforting sense of warmth and cosiness.

Tip: Choose 3-4 shades ranging from pale to dark. Use paler tones on the walls, and accent with richer hues.

Many people are a bit nervous about using colour, and stick to safe neutrals in their homes.
