His latest enterprise was the opening of a 3,000 square foot boutique in London’s prestigious Notting Hill.

Adler’s designs are inspired by a broad range of eras; from mid-century modern art to global pop culture, which makes his pieces so universally appealing. He believes that “happiness begins at home” and I couldn’t agree more. Much of his inspiration came from his dad, “My dad was a rigorous modernist, so the house was all white and full of Knoll furniture”.

His love for pottery began as a child at summer camp. He then spent sixteen years perfecting his craft before presenting his work to luxury department store Barneys in New York. They immediately put in an order. After this initial success he vowed never to work a ‘proper’ job again – much to his parent’s dismay!

Image published with kind permission from Jonathan Adler.

Jonathan’s pottery is distinctly colourful, fun and quirky. It is also exceptionally well-crafted. The motto he abides by when designing pieces is as amusing as his work, “If your heirs won’t fight over it, we won’t make it”. This just reaffirms Jonathan’s love for quality and luxurious interior design.

He moved from ceramics into designing furniture back in 2002, but his heart still belongs to the potter’s wheel. He has since branched out even further into textiles, towels and stationary bedding, much to the delight of his loyal fans. His style could be described in a number of ways, but I’d suggest not using the word, ‘kitsch’. Adler has said “Kitsch is so un-chic to me and I strive to make flawlessly chic and incredibly smile-inducing design”.

Image published with kind permission from Jonathan Adler.

Jonathan’s furniture designs are a little more pared back than his pottery, but still bear his signature with and delight. While many modern furniture designers prefer classic neutralism and simple silhouettes, Adler’s furniture is colourful and fantastical. He isn’t afraid to experiment with form and function. Wild colours, fanciful shapes and unexpected embellishments (like oversized drawer handles) are all part of Adler’s repertoire.

Image published with kind permission from Jonathan Adler.

Jonathan Adler is as full of sparkling bòn móts as he is original designs.
