Alas, the indulgences of Christmas often mean my decorating budget is practically non-existent come January. If you’re in the same boat, this article is for you. Here are four ways to transform your space without spending a single penny.

Rearrange Your Furniture

It’s a really simple tip but few people do it. In fact, most people leave their furniture in the exact same place they put it when they first moved in. Even if it’s not the most logical or aesthetically pleasing spot. Trying a new layout can make a room feel bigger, look brighter, and flow better. You might even find that remote control you lost years ago.

Put Leftover Paint to Good Use

If you’ve got half-empty cans of paint stashed in your shed it’s time to find a use for them. Colour is one of the best ways to transform a space, but you don’t have to paint the walls to make a big difference. Try painting the fireplace, a radiator, or upcycling an old piece of furniture to quickly – and cheaply – refresh your space.

Try a New Way to Display Your Artwork

There are many different ways to display an art collection. In fact, the display can become part of the art itself. You can layer art on a bookshelf, lean larger pieces on the floor, create a corner gallery wall (as above) or try a different framing method. But if you prefer the conventional approach, just try swapping the art in one room for another for a very quick and easy change.

Colour-Code Your Bookshelves

This is all the rage on Instagram and Pinterest at the moment. It only really works if you’re not fussed about arranging your books in alphabetical order, but it does bring a sophisticated splash of colour to a space. It instantly gives your bookcase a lift, and while you’re there rearranging the books, you can add some artwork and ornaments too.

Image: Clair Strong Interior Design Around this time every year, I feel inspired to make some changes in my home.
