Composite stone is especially popular because it comes in a wide variety of colours and is very hard-wearing.

Stone worktops look and feel very luxurious, and they pair beautifully with wooden cabinets for a striking juxtaposition.

Contrasting Colours

You’ve probably seen painted kitchen cabinets all over Pinterest and Instagram, it’s a trend that took hold just a few years ago but it’s already evolving…

Now, we’re seeing a mix-and-match look where wall cabinets are painted in one colour and base units in another. You can be really creative here, giving your kitchen a custom look without spending thousands of pounds on bespoke carpentry.

Industrial Features

Image: Clair Strong Interior Design

The industrial trend is nothing new, but I’m definitely seeing more of it in kitchen design this year. This is a really utilitarian look that focuses on functionality. Think concrete floors, exposed pipes, chunky stone worktops, and steel framed shelving. Everything is designed to be durable and low-maintenance, as is practical in a kitchen.

Industrial elements are often paired with traditional Shaker style units (as pictured above). This provides a nice balance for the space and keeps it from becoming overwhelmingly ‘themed’.

Patterned Tile

Image: Clair Strong Interior Design

More is definitely more with this trend. There’s a growing love for patterned tiles in both the kitchen and bathroom. It’s a great way to have a bit of fun in a space that doesn’t often call for lots of accessories.

The best thing about this particular trend is that you can create all sorts of different looks with it. You can achieve the boho kitchen of your dreams, create a cool retro vibe, or add a bit of flair to a simple Scandinavian space.

You can also buy vinyl sheeting for floors and walls that has patterned tiles printed onto it. This is easier to install and often more affordable than tiling an entire space.

Kitchen design has come a long way over the past few years; it might even be one of the fastest moving areas of interior design.
