But that’s what I love about interior design; inspiration comes from the unlikeliest of sources.

This particular trend takes its cues from the American south-west; desert states like Arizona, New Mexico and the south-eastern tip of California. It’s a warm, deeply rustic look characterised by vintage textiles, weathered leather, animal skulls, and cacti – lots of cacti. The colour scheme is muted, and heavily features shades of red, brown and cream. It could be described as a sort of pared-back ‘boho’ look.

Intrigued? Read on for a few tips on incorporating this look into your space.

Textiles

One of the easiest ways to try a new trend is with textiles. They are impermanent, and can be swapped in and out as you wish. Keep it simple with one or two pieces in a traditional Navajo print. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns as this trend embraces a bit of light clashing.

Natural Materials

Raw wood, weathered brown leather and animal skins are important elements of this trend. Now, I know animal skulls aren’t to everyone’s tastes, so avoid these if you prefer.

A brown leather sofa, preferably vintage and a bit worn, is perfect for this look. As is wood furniture in a rustic and raw finish. It gives a wild, carefree aesthetic – a bit like the landscape that inspires it.

Cacti

What would this trend be without at least a nod to an iconic desert native? Cacti thrive in extremely dry environments; they are tough and low-maintenance, making them ideal houseplants.

You’ve probably noticed that cacti – and other succulents – are hugely popular at the moment. Not just in the flesh, but in print and pattern too. If you have children or pets, you might not want to keep potentially painful plants in the house. Fortunately you can embrace this trend with cactus printed textiles or an oversized piece of botanical art instead.

Image: Clair Strong Interior Design The desert isn’t the first place most of us would turn to for home decorating tips.
