They just seem to come and go a little slower, a little more deliberately.

Today I’ve rounded up some of the most exciting trends cropping up in the garden at the moment. Let’s dig in:

Garden to Table

Edible gardening has really taken off this year, with more and more people opting to grow their own produce.

You can enjoy a taste of The Good Life with even the smallest of plots. People are growing on patios, balconies and on their window sills. It’s all part of a move towards a more sustainable lifestyle and self-sufficiency. Growing your own fruit and veg is immensely satisfying, and honestly, nothing tastes better.

Natural and Wild

Formal gardens with manicured lawns and neat flower beds seem to be on the wane. Instead people are opting for a more naturalistic landscape.

This trend allows for a wild and overgrown garden. Wildflowers, ornamental grasses and climbing plants are ideal for this look. If you need some inspiration, I’d heartily recommend a visit to the wonderful gardens at Hauser and Wirth in Somerset. Behind the gallery building there is a 1.5 acre perennial meadow designed by landscape architect Piet Oudolf.

Wildlife Gardening

Just like edible gardening, this trend is focused on benefiting the environment. By planting specific plants, installing ponds, and assembling bird boxes we can help native wildlife thrive. You’ll also get to enjoy the presence of wild animals and endangered insects in your garden.

If you’re interested in learning more about how you can help hedgehogs, butterflies, sparrows and stag beetles, check out this guide.

Gnomes (Yes, Really)

It seems those colourful creatures we thought were gone for good have emerged from the hedgerow. I’m not really a fan of gnomes, but they can be amusing, and the kids love them! If you really want to make a statement, ASDA are currently selling giant gnomes for just £25.

Image: Clair Strong Interior Design My job is very much focused indoors, but I wholeheartedly believe that the outdoors – the gardens, terraces and balconies – complete a space.
